How to Ship Rocks and Minerals Home From Tucson (2027)

2026-10-15

Pick the right way to ship rocks, minerals and fossils home from the Tucson gem shows by weight: USPS up to 70 lbs, UPS up to 150 lbs, freight above that, plus packing rules for heavy boxes.

Rocks are dense, so the weight of each box decides how you ship it. Weigh or estimate each box, then use the table below. Carrier rules here were checked on Oct 15, 2026. Always confirm price and limits with the carrier before you pack.

Pick a carrier by weight

Each box weighs Best fit Limits to know
Up to 70 lbs USPS (Priority Mail Flat Rate or by weight) USPS's maximum is 70 lbs and 130 inches length plus girth. Anything over that is nonmailable, and USPS charges a $200 overweight or oversize fee if one gets into its network.
70 to 150 lbs UPS UPS packages can weigh up to 150 lbs, be up to 108 inches long, and measure up to 165 inches in length plus girth.
Over 150 lbs, or a pallet Freight (LTL) UPS says pallet freight over 150 lbs moves as less-than-truckload (LTL) freight. If you have several boxes that total 151 lbs or more without a pallet, UPS says UPS Ground with Freight Pricing may work. See our freight and pallet guide.

Dense, small specimens usually fit a Flat Rate box best, since you pay one price up to 70 lbs. See USPS Flat Rate box sizes and prices.

Watch dimensional weight on big boxes

UPS bills by dimensional weight when a box is large for its weight: length × width × height in inches, divided by 139 (Daily Rates) or 166 (Retail Rates). Rocks are usually heavy for their size, so this mostly matters when you pad a few pieces into an oversized box. Use the smallest box that fits the padding.

Pack heavy boxes the way USPS requires

USPS has specific rules for high-density items:

  • 20 to 45 lbs: a fiberboard box of at least 200-pound test board (or an equivalent wood, metal or plastic container).
  • 45 to 70 lbs: at least 275-pound test fiberboard.
  • Boxes with no inner packing must be reinforced or banded with reinforced tape, filament tape or nonmetallic banding.
  • The packed box has to survive being dropped once on one of its smallest sides from 3 feet without damage to the contents.
  • Don't pack heavy items together with fragile ones unless they're carefully separated, and fill voids so nothing shifts.

The board test rating is usually printed on the box's bottom flap. Buy boxes rated for the weight. See where to get shipping boxes near the shows.

Ship from the show, or nearby

TucsonGemShow101 says UPS and DHL run stations at several high-volume venues, with domestic and international shipping and packing materials. If you're buying a lot, ask the vendor first, since they may have cheaper bulk freight. Off-site, our Ship & Store listings include The UPS Store, the Tucson post office and The Gloo Factory.

Time it around closing days

GJX and AGTA close Feb 4, JOGS Feb 7 and Pueblo Feb 9, and most other shows close Feb 13 to 15, 2027 (dates per TucsonGemShow101). Ship early in your trip, or the day before your show closes, to avoid the last-day lines. See shipping options by show week.
